On Sunday, May 5, 2024, 17-year-old Giovanni Flores of Moline, Illinois, was fatally shot along with 19-year-old Zachary Meincke in the early morning hours. The incident occurred in the 1800 block of 31st Street in Moline, where police responded to a call about an unknown problem and found both victims dead from gunshot wounds in the basement of a house. Giovanni Flores died from a gunshot wound to the head, while Zachary Meincke suffered gunshot wounds to both the head and chest.
The Moline Police Department launched an extensive investigation into the double homicide, involving numerous detectives who worked through hundreds of leads, conducted interviews, and analyzed video and other digital information. Police Chief Darren Gault emphasized the department's commitment to pursuing justice for the victims and their families, urging the community to provide any information related to the incident.
On May 21, 2024, after 16 days of investigation, the Moline Police Department announced the arrest of 20-year-old Israel Martinez of Davenport, who is accused of being solely responsible for the double homicide. Martinez was charged with seven counts, including two counts of first-degree murder. He was arrested following the execution of two search warrants, one in East Moline and another in Davenport, and is currently being held in Scott County jail awaiting extradition to Illinois.
Giovanni Flores, affectionately known as Gio, was a junior at Moline High School and worked at Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse. He was known for his infectious smile, humor, and vibrant personality, with passions that included fast cars, fitness, and fashion. Gio was a beloved son, brother, and friend, and his death has had a profound impact on the community. A memorial was built in his honor along with Zachary Meincke's, but it was later taken down in collaboration with the families.
Funeral services for Giovanni Flores included a visitation on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at Trimble Funeral Home & Crematory, followed by a memorial mass on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Moline. He was laid to rest in Moline Memorial Park.
