On May 13, 2024, 48-year-old Gregory W. Hostetler, owner of Greg's Towing & Recovery and Five Star Auto Sales, was fatally shot during a dispute at his business in Hervey City, Illinois. The altercation began when 25-year-old Tiimon Perry arrived to retrieve a vehicle that had been towed earlier that day. A disagreement over towing fees escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Perry produced a handgun and shot Hostetler in the head, resulting in his immediate death.
During the incident, 18-year-old employee Kolby Sunderland attempted to disarm Perry and was shot in the shoulder. Despite his injury, Sunderland managed to wrest the gun from Perry and shot him in the groin. Both Sunderland and Perry were transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital for treatment. Perry was arrested following surgery and faces charges including first-degree murder and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
Hostetler, born on December 15, 1975, in Decatur, Illinois, was a 1994 graduate of Decatur Christian School. He was renowned for his extensive collection of antique oil cans and toys, a passion he shared with his father. He is survived by his parents, Leonard and Rosalee Hostetler of Mt. Zion; his fiancée, Tonya Rudolph, and her three children; his sister, Cheryl Sunderland; and several nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
The Macon County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Mt. Zion Police Department and the Illinois State Police, is investigating the case. Authorities have extended condolences to Hostetler's family and the Hervey City community.
Hostetler's death underscores the potential dangers faced by professionals in the towing and repossession industry, highlighting the need for increased safety measures and awareness during high-tension situations.
