On Friday, November 1, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred in Summit, Illinois, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including 16-year-old Jaydin Bahena. The incident happened around 10:20 p.m. near the intersection of Hanover Street and 73rd Court. Jaydin, an 11th-grade student at Argo Community High School, was found with gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead the following day, November 2, 2024.
Jaydin was described by his school as "an unnecessary victim of violence, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time." He was known for his kind heart, vibrant personality, and the positive impact he had on everyone around him. Jaydin worked at an Autozone shop on Archer and 72nd Court and was riding his bike home from work when he was shot.
In addition to Jaydin, a 34-year-old man was also found with gunshot wounds in a nearby vehicle. Initially, the man was identified as Jose David Rosales in some reports, but later confirmed to be Juan Jose Morales of Summit. Morales was pronounced dead at the hospital on the night of the shooting.
The police investigation, conducted by the Summit police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, indicates that both victims were shot by the same person. However, as of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
Argo Community High School has been deeply affected by Jaydin's death, with the school's principal, Brandon J. Cotter, expressing the community's grief and admiration for Jaydin. The school has made social workers and counselors available to students and staff to cope with the loss. A GoFundMe page set up by Jaydin's family to help with funeral and memorial expenses has received significant support from the community.
