In the quiet, early morning hours of April 16, 2023, in a residence in southern Bulloch County, Georgia, the life of 17-year-old Kelsey Amanda McDuffie, a female junior at Coastal Plains Charter High School, was tragically cut short. She was with 18-year-old Adan Allen Keelin at a home on Arthur Nubern Road when the incident occurred. Keelin was reportedly showing McDuffie how to disassemble and reassemble a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. During this process, the firearm discharged while in Keelin's hands.
The single bullet fired from the handgun traveled through Keelin's left hand before striking McDuffie in the back of her head. In the immediate aftermath, McDuffie was privately transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was subsequently airlifted to Memorial Medical Center in Savannah. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Kelsey McDuffie succumbed to her injuries. In a testament to her character, and in line with her previously expressed wishes, her family made the decision for her to be an organ donor, a choice that was deeply meaningful to them as her father was a heart transplant recipient.
The investigation into McDuffie's death was conducted by the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office. Following their investigation and in consultation with the District Attorney's Office, Adan Allen Keelin was arrested on May 9, 2023. He initially faced serious charges, including felony involuntary manslaughter, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and reckless conduct. However, the legal proceedings saw a significant change in the gravity of the charges against him.
During a bond hearing on May 30, 2023, a judge reduced Keelin's charges. The felony involuntary manslaughter charge was lessened to a misdemeanor, and the charge of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime was dismissed. Keelin ultimately entered a guilty plea to the remaining misdemeanor charges. His sentence included 120 days to be served in jail on weekends, 80 hours of community service, and a fine of $1,500. Additionally, he was ordered to complete a firearms safety course and an alcohol and drug evaluation. As a condition of his probation, he is prohibited from owning a firearm and from having any contact with the McDuffie family.
