On a Sunday evening, June 4, 2023, life for 32-year-old Frederick Lamar Scott Jr. was cut tragically short at a Shell gas station in Eatonton, Georgia. An argument that began at a gas pump escalated, leading to a fatal encounter. The male victim, known to friends and family as 'Muffin' and the 'life of the party' for his comedic nature, was shot once in the chest. His own father, Frederick Scott Sr., was the first to reach his side in the harrowing moments that followed.
Scott was unarmed during the confrontation and was later pronounced dead at Putnam General Hospital.
The investigation quickly identified 24-year-old Lajuan Peire Evans of Covington as the suspect. According to the police chief, Evans held a gun in his hand the entire time he was pumping gas while talking with Scott before firing the single, fatal shot. The day after the shooting, Evans turned himself in to the authorities. The Morgan and Putnam County sheriff's offices assisted the Eatonton Police Department in the investigation. He was subsequently arrested and charged with malice murder.
Lajuan Peire Evans faced trial in Putnam County Superior Court. The prosecution presented evidence, including security camera footage that captured the shooting. Evans claimed that he acted in self-defense. However, the gun used in the shooting and Evans' cellphone were never recovered by law enforcement. On February 21, 2024, after just over an hour of deliberation, the jury returned a guilty verdict on all charges, including malice murder. The judge sentenced Evans, then 25, to life in prison plus five years, with the possibility of parole.
