Mandeep Singh, a 36-year-old Indian American man, was shot and killed on the evening of June 28, 2023. Known affectionately as Ricky to his friends and family, Singh had been working as a clerk at the Wrens Food Mart on Highway 80 for less than a month.
The incident unfolded at approximately 8:35 p.m. when two individuals entered the convenience store.
What began as an apparent armed robbery escalated, and shots were fired, striking Singh twice. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The entire event was captured on the store's security cameras, which showed the perpetrators making little attempt to conceal their identities.
The clarity of the video footage proved crucial for law enforcement. Wrens Police Chief John Maynard stated that the suspects were identified within two hours of the incident. The first suspect was apprehended within four hours, and the second was in custody just over eight hours after the shooting. The swift arrests brought a small measure of relief to a community grappling with the senseless violence.
The suspects were identified as two 15-year-old boys. Due to their status as juveniles, their names and photographs were not publicly released by the authorities. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence and its devastating impact on families and communities. Following his death, Singh's body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for autopsy. A GoFundMe page was established by his wife, Dimple Kaur, to help with funeral costs and to support his family, for whom he was the sole provider.
