In a tragic and horrifying turn of events, 19-year-old Khaliyah Jones was killed on Sunday, July 16, 2023, after being kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend from her workplace in Fayetteville, Georgia. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Cameron Ja'Michael Hopkins, now faces a multitude of charges, including murder. The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. at a Wingstop restaurant on North Glynn Street, where Hopkins allegedly entered and abducted Jones at gunpoint. This marked the second time Hopkins had kidnapped Jones, with the first abduction occurring exactly one year prior on July 16, 2022.
Witnesses at the restaurant immediately contacted the authorities, reporting that Hopkins had forced Jones into a red Chevrolet Camaro and fled the scene. Fayetteville police officers quickly spotted the vehicle and initiated a pursuit. The chase spanned from Fayette County into Clayton County, reaching speeds of over 100 mph before ending in the driveway of Lovejoy High School. There, officers performed a PIT maneuver to disable the Camaro.
Once the vehicle was stopped, a chaotic scene ensued as several gunshots were fired from inside the car. Hopkins also fired at the officers, striking their patrol vehicles multiple times. After a standoff, during which Hopkins refused to exit the vehicle, deputies from the Fayette County Sheriff's Office deployed an irritant into the car, compelling him to surrender. Tragically, Khaliyah Jones was discovered inside the vehicle with several gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that at the time of the murder, Hopkins was out on a $162,000 bond for the previous kidnapping of Jones from a Walmart parking lot in Lovejoy. During that incident, he had threatened to kill her if police intervened. Following the fatal kidnapping, Hopkins was charged with malice murder, kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime. A judge subsequently denied him bond. Jones's mother revealed that Hopkins had been threatening her daughter and their family for months and that her daughter had wanted to help him despite the danger.
