In the late afternoon of August 7, 2023, in Kingsland, Georgia, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal act of violence that ended the life of Ruby English. The female victim found herself in a terrifying situation when her 43-year-old husband, Octavian Grace, brandished a handgun. In a desperate attempt to save her own life, English fled to her bedroom, barricading the door with furniture.
Trapped in her second-story apartment, she placed a frantic call to her parents, who tried to
reason with Grace. Despite their pleas, he remained intent on harming his wife. Left with no other choice, English made a courageous leap from her bedroom window, falling into the bushes below. Her escape, however, was tragically short-lived. Grace pursued her, running downstairs and shooting her twice in the chest and torso.
Kingsland Police Department officers were dispatched to the Caney Heights Court apartment complex around 5:44 p.m., where they discovered English with gunshot wounds. They administered aid until paramedics arrived and transported her to Southeast Georgia Health System's Camden Campus, where she succumbed to her injuries.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Grace fled into a nearby wooded area, discarding the firearm as he ran. Law enforcement quickly established a perimeter and were able to persuade him to surrender without further incident. The entire tragic event was witnessed by a landscaper working at the property and was also captured by the apartment complex's surveillance cameras. Grace was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He later confessed to the murder.
On May 15, 2024, Octavian Grace pleaded guilty to felony murder and aggravated assault in Camden County Superior Court. As part of a negotiated plea agreement, he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. He will not be eligible for parole for at least 30 years. He also received a concurrent 20-year sentence for the aggravated assault charge. Several of Ruby English's family members, including her parents, siblings, children, and grandchildren, were present for the court proceedings.
