The suspect was quickly identified as her 34-year-old estranged husband, Dustin Allen Phillips. According to Vennessa's family, the couple had a tumultuous relationship, and she had recently left him. Her brother described their relationship as being fraught with violence and conflict, stating that his sister had made multiple allegations of physical and mental abuse against Dustin. Family members believe that Vennessa had taken her four-year-old daughter to see Dustin at his uncle's home on the night of the shooting.
