In the early morning hours of July 14, 2024, a wedding celebration in Jackson, Georgia, turned into a scene of violence that left one man dead and two others with non-life-threatening injuries. Jason Maughon, a 44-year-old male, was shot and killed during the event. Deputies from the Butts County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at approximately 1:00 a.m. regarding a shooting on Peoples Road. Upon arrival, they discovered that Maughon had been shot. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His body was later taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, which would reveal he had been shot seven times.
The investigation into the homicide was taken over by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation at the request of the local sheriff's office. Suspicion soon fell upon the groom, Aaron Derek White, who was the new husband of Maughon's stepdaughter. Accounts from the day suggest a tense atmosphere, with a confrontation occurring between Maughon and another relative even before the ceremony began. The situation escalated during the wedding reception. Investigators reported that after a fight, Maughon and another relative arrived at the event in separate cars. It was then that Maughon reportedly charged at the 33-year-old groom.
The events that followed are a matter of legal dispute. White told investigators that in response to being physically assaulted, he went to his truck to retrieve his firearm. He has maintained that he acted in self-defense, stating he feared for his life. Some reports indicate that the other relative who had arrived with Maughon began firing a gun, while others suggest Maughon fired first, striking White in the hand. In January 2026, the case took a significant turn when a Butts County grand jury indicted Aaron White on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault. This decision came after a previous grand jury had reportedly found that White acted in self-defense. However, the district attorney presented the case to a second grand jury, which resulted in the indictment. Following the indictment, White was arrested and subsequently released on a $100,000 bond.
