In the summer of 2024, a life was tragically cut short in East Point, a city in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Myesa Shavontae Green, a 29-year-old Black/African American woman, was killed on August 6, 2024. Her death, a result of gun violence, left a void in the lives of her family, including her three young children, ages six, four, and one.
The events that led to Green's untimely death reportedly began with a dispute.
According to an arrest warrant, an altercation occurred between Green and a man named Jerome Issac Coggins. Though the initial confrontation was broken up, the situation escalated dramatically. Coggins is alleged to have gone into his residence, retrieved a handgun, and then opened fire on Green and two other individuals. Green attempted to flee in a vehicle, but the assailant continued to shoot. Another man was also wounded in the shooting.
In the wake of the violence, the East Point police investigated the incident and identified Jerome Issac Coggins as the primary suspect. He was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Myesa Shavontae Green. Green's grieving parents, while grappling with the immense loss of their daughter, have called for an end to gun violence in the community. They are now faced with the profound responsibility of raising their three grandchildren, who are left to navigate life without their mother.
Funeral services for Myesa Shavontae Green were held in late August 2024, with a public viewing on August 23 and a Celebration of Life service on August 24 at the Willie A. Watkins Historic West End Chapel in Atlanta. The family established a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral expenses and to provide for the future of her three children. As the legal process moves forward, Green's family holds onto the hope that justice will be served for her and her children.
