A homecoming afterparty in Elberton, Georgia, took a tragic turn on the night of October 12, 2024, resulting in the death of 15-year-old Bry’shun Treviyus O’Brian Jordan and the injury of seven others. The shooting occurred just before midnight at a nightclub on Evergreen Drive where a celebration was underway. Jordan, a student at Hart Academy, was critically injured and airlifted to AnMed Hospital in Anderson, South Carolina, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The other victims, whose ages ranged from 15 to 19, along with a 41-year-old adult, sustained various injuries, with five being treated and released from Elbert Memorial Hospital and two requiring further medical attention in Athens.
The investigation into the deadly shooting was a collaborative effort involving the Elbert County Sheriff's Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation the Elbert County Coroner's Office, and the GBI Medical Examiner's Office. In the weeks that followed, a total of eight individuals were arrested in connection with the incident. The suspects, primarily from Anderson, South Carolina, and surrounding counties in Georgia, face a range of serious charges.
The first to be apprehended was 18-year-old Jarquavious Scott of Anderson, who was charged with murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and violating Georgia's anti-gang law. Soon after, authorities arrested four more men from Anderson: Destanne Mathis, 20; Aanidras Parks, 18; Jerimiyah Hughes, 19; and Desmond Latimer, 18. All four face murder and gang-related charges, with Mathis and Latimer also charged with being a party to a crime, and Parks and Hughes facing additional charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
The series of arrests continued with the capture of 19-year-old Christopher Bell in DeKalb County, who was charged with murder, violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, aggravated battery, and four counts of aggravated assault. The final two suspects identified and arrested were Demarion Jamal Raiford, 18, of Jackson County, and Zorion Tymal Sims, 19, of Oglethorpe County. They were both charged with murder, four counts of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed by investigators. In the wake of his death, Bry'shun Jordan was remembered by his community as a 'gentle giant' whose smile could light up any room. His sister, ShaBrian Jordan, expressed the family's deep desire to understand why the tragedy occurred, stating, 'They took a son. They took a brother. They took my son's uncle. He was a good kid.'
