On March 14, 2023, 22-year-old Rodney Sweeney of Largo, Florida, died as a result of a shooting that occurred at the Surf Style surf shop on Clearwater Beach. The incident happened around 8 p.m. when an argument between Sweeney and two other men escalated into a violent confrontation.
According to investigators, Sweeney approached a man on the second floor of the surf shop and struck him. This man, identified as 20-year-old Johnathan Stanley of Clearwater, then pulled out a gun and fired three rounds, with two of the bullets striking Sweeney. Despite immediate medical response, Sweeney was taken to Morton Plant Hospital with life-threatening injuries and succumbed to them.
The Clearwater Police Department quickly identified Johnathan Stanley as the suspect and arrested him the following night at Clearwater Mall. Stanley was charged with second-degree murder and is being held on a $750,000 bond. It was also revealed that Stanley was already wanted by the police for an unrelated matter.
In addition to Stanley's arrest, 19-year-old Zayah Massucci was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact related to the shooting. Massucci had provided Stanley with safe harbor and helped him despite knowing that police were looking for him. Massucci, who has a job on Clearwater Beach and is associated with Stanley, also faced a charge for possession of marijuana.
Surveillance video and witness accounts indicate that the altercation began with a verbal exchange between Sweeney and Stanley, which then turned physical. Clearwater Police Chief Daniel Slaughter emphasized that the battery committed by Sweeney was no excuse for Stanley to use a firearm, especially in a crowded establishment. The police used a network of cameras and real-time operations to quickly identify and locate Stanley, leading to his swift arrest.
The incident is described as isolated, and Chief Slaughter reassured the public that crime is down in Clearwater Beach compared to the previous year. Despite this, police have increased patrols in the area to ensure public safety, particularly during spring break.
