On May 31, 2023, 24-year-old Taj Anthony Butler of Daytona Beach, Florida, was fatally shot in a drive-by incident. While stopped at a red light at the intersection of South Nova Road and Bellevue Avenue, a dark-colored Kia pulled alongside Butler's vehicle, and occupants opened fire, striking him multiple times. Butler was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath, authorities arrested 29-year-old Devonte Smokes as a person of interest. A grand jury later indicted Smokes for first-degree murder, alleging he shot Butler while the latter was stopped in traffic. Subsequently, 37-year-old Cory Crooms was apprehended following a high-speed chase. Investigators charged Crooms with principal to premeditated first-degree murder, accusing him of facilitating access to firearms, masks, and the vehicle used in the crime.
Butler's death was a targeted attack, according to police. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities not ruling out additional arrests. Butler is remembered for his passion for music, sports, and entrepreneurship, having initiated his own clothing line. He is survived by his daughter, Ny'Launi Brown, his parents, and numerous siblings.
