Napoleon Brown, a 35-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, died on June 10, 2023, as a result of a deadly shooting in an Orange Park home. The incident occurred during an argument that escalated into violence.
On the evening of the shooting, Clay County deputies were called to a home on Constitution Drive after a 911 call reported a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies detained John Robert Thigpen and conducted a security sweep of the home.
During the sweep, they found Napoleon Brown on the floor between the kitchen and the living room, suffering from a gunshot wound. Clay County paramedics confirmed Brown was dead at the scene.
Thigpen was taken to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office for questioning. He had visible injuries, including redness, bruising, and swelling around his left eye. The arrest report indicated that Thigpen's statements to the detective were inconsistent, and there was a delay in reporting the shooting. Physical evidence at the scene, including a semi-automatic handgun found near Brown’s body, bloody drag marks on the floor, and two spent bullet rounds, supported the charges against Thigpen.
Thigpen was charged with second-degree murder because he did not appear to be in imminent danger when he shot Brown. He was booked into the Clay County jail and denied bond after appearing before a judge. The investigation and arrest were captured on surveillance video, showing deputies taking Thigpen into custody at gunpoint.
The community was shocked by the incident, describing the family involved as quiet and keeping to themselves. The sudden and violent nature of the event was particularly disturbing for the neighbors, who expressed their surprise and sadness over the tragedy.
