Albert Camentz, a 58-year-old resident of Delray Beach, Florida, died on September 13, 2023, due to a gunshot wound. The incident occurred at a beachfront condo located at Berkshire by the Sea on North Ocean Boulevard, just north of Atlantic Avenue. Camentz was at the condo as part of a small gathering that included his friends Jack Feinberg and Susan Schneider, who had invited him to join them after a night out at a club in Boca Raton.
The group had planned to continue their evening by drinking and using the condo's hot tub. Mark David Anderson, a 45-year-old self-employed carpenter from Lake Worth, was the occupant of the timeshare condo and had agreed to let Camentz join the group despite never having met him before. According to witnesses, Anderson emerged from his room holding a black object, which was later identified as a gun, and shot Camentz. The witnesses reported hearing a loud boom and seeing Camentz fall to the ground, complaining of chest pains and difficulty breathing.
Despite his injuries, Camentz managed to get up after about 15 minutes and was driven by his friends to their home on Petunia Road, more than six miles away from the condo. Camentz refused to go to the hospital, believing he was feeling better, but his condition worsened. Schneider called 911 at around 2:45 a.m. after Camentz became pale and complained of chest pains. Paramedics from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue arrived and quickly realized Camentz had been shot. They rushed him to Delray Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:29 p.m.
The investigation led by the Delray Beach Police Department resulted in the arrest of Mark David Anderson on first-degree murder charges. Police found a gun and ammunition in Anderson's condo, along with evidence of cocaine and other substances. Anderson declined to make a statement and requested an attorney.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, with witnesses insisting there was no known conflict between Camentz and Anderson. The case has been complicated by conflicting statements from Feinberg, who initially attributed his confusion about the events to a cognitive disorder. Despite these inconsistencies, Schneider's testimony was clear: she identified Anderson as the gunman and described the events leading up to the shooting.
Anderson has been denied bond, and the prosecution is building a case against him based on the evidence and witness statements. The community, particularly those who knew Camentz through his love of New Orleans music, has been shocked and saddened by his death.
