On September 16, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in the Summerfield subdivision of Riverview, Florida, resulting in the death of 39-year-old Tiffany Harris. Harris was shot and killed by her 14-year-old son, Adeem Berry. The incident also involved Harris's boyfriend, Cortevious Crews, who was shot multiple times but managed to survive.
The events unfolded when Berry got up from watching TV with Crews and walked into another room without explanation.
He returned with a gun and began shooting Crews, who was hit at least five times in the hands, shoulder, jaw, and leg. Harris intervened, screaming and giving Crews time to escape the house, which likely saved his life. Despite her efforts, Harris was fatally shot by her son.
Crews described the incident, stating that he was frightened when Berry returned with the gun and started shooting him. He collapsed in the driveway and later learned from the news that Harris had died from her injuries. Crews has been severely impacted by the shooting, unable to eat or shower on his own due to his extensive gunshot wounds.
Following the shooting, Hillsborough County deputies responded to the scene and found Berry running down the street with a gun. A 16-minute negotiation ensued, during which Berry repeatedly pointed the gun at his own head. Deputies eventually used a non-lethal round to subdue him and took him into custody.
Adeem Berry has been charged with murder in the second degree with a weapon, attempted murder in the first degree premeditated firearm discharge, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The sheriff's office noted that Berry had no prior criminal history, and the incident has been described as a scene "that nightmares are made of," with the sheriff stating that Berry's life will likely be spent in a detention facility.
Tiffany Harris was remembered by her boyfriend as a loving and caring person who was a mother of three and was about to become a grandmother. She was described as having many friends who looked up to her and as someone who loved her children deeply. Crews referred to Harris as his hero, emphasizing that she saved his life by intervening during the shooting.
