On March 18, 2018, Kenyatta Barron, aged 33, was tragically killed in Riverview, Florida. The horrific incident occurred late at night when Ronnie O'Neal III, her ex-boyfriend, launched a brutal attack on her and their children. According to reports, O'Neal fatally shot Kenyatta Barron and then proceeded to hack their 9-year-old daughter, Ron'Niveya O'Neal, to death with a hatchet.
The violence did not end there; O'Neal also stabbed their 8-year-old son, Ronnie O'Neal IV, who miraculously survived the attack and later informed detectives that his father had shot his mother. The young boy was critically injured and had to be medevacked to a Tampa hospital for emergency treatment.
The events leading up to the murders were chaotic and terrifying. Kenyatta Barron made a desperate 911 call, during which she could be heard pleading for her life. In the background, O'Neal could be heard shouting "Allah Akbar" and making incoherent statements about demons. Shortly after, O'Neal himself called 911, claiming that he had been attacked by "white demons" and that Kenyatta had tried to kill him. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Kenyatta lying unconscious in the yard, and the house was set on fire by O'Neal in an attempt to destroy evidence. Despite the chaos, young Ronnie IV managed to escape the burning home with severe stab wounds and burns.
Ronnie O'Neal III was arrested at the scene after a brief struggle with law enforcement. He was charged with multiple counts, including two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated child abuse, one count of arson, and one count of resisting a law enforcement officer. During the trial, O'Neal chose to represent himself, often making bizarre and erratic statements in court. Despite his attempts to defend his actions, he was found guilty on all counts. On July 23, 2021, O'Neal was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 90 years.
The case drew significant media attention due to the gruesome nature of the crimes and O'Neal's behavior during the trial. It was revealed that there had been previous tensions in the household, possibly related to O'Neal's efforts to convert the family to Islam and his belief in the subordination of women.
