On October 4, 2023, 36-year-old Terrance Hill was fatally shot in St. Petersburg, Florida. The incident occurred in the 3900 block of 13th Avenue South, where officers from the St. Petersburg Police Department responded to a call of a person shot around noon.
Upon arrival, officers found Terrance Hill with life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he later died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation revealed that the shooting resulted from an altercation between Hill and Douglas Lee Dawson, a 34-year-old man known to Hill. A witness reported that Dawson had called Hill earlier that morning to argue about a money dispute. The witness then drove Dawson to meet Hill, after which the witness left the area.
Video recordings from the scene showed Dawson and Hill involved in an altercation. Following the altercation, Hill walked out of view, and Dawson was seen walking behind him and appearing to shoot at him before running away. Police identified Dawson from the video footage.
Douglas Lee Dawson turned himself in to the Pinellas County Jail shortly before midnight on October 5, 2023. He was charged with second-degree murder for the shooting death of Terrance Hill. Additionally, Dawson was held on charges related to violation of probation, tampering with an electronic monitoring device, and felony battery.
The police report indicated that the dispute between Dawson and Hill was over money, and the two men had a prior acquaintance with each other, having argued before the shooting.
