Amber Renee Estep, a 39-year-old resident of Cocoa, Florida, was reported missing by her mother on January 19, 2024, after she failed to show up for work for several shifts. The last person to see her was her husband, Brian Estep, who claimed that they had an argument following a doctor’s appointment on January 16. According to Brian Estep, the argument led to Amber requesting to be let out of the vehicle near Interstate 95, just north of State Road 50.
He stated that Amber slapped him and walked away with a person’s cellphone despite his pleas for her to return.
However, investigations by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office revealed a different narrative. Brian Estep's pickup truck was found engulfed in flames in Port St. John, and subsequent searches led investigators to an area known as the “Black Hole,” where they discovered blood that matched Amber’s. Further evidence indicated that Brian Estep had moved Amber’s body from this location under the cover of darkness and drove her remains around northern Brevard and southern Volusia counties before discarding them off State Route 46 in Mims, where her body was ultimately found.
The investigation revealed that Amber had been shot multiple times and suffered severe head trauma. Despite Brian Estep’s attempts to destroy evidence and fabricate an alibi, the sheriff’s office was able to connect him directly to the murder. Brian Estep was arrested in West Virginia, where he had moved after leaving his home in Titusville, Florida. He is currently being held without bond and faces charges of first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm and tampering with evidence. He is awaiting extradition back to Brevard County.
The Brevard County Sheriff, Wayne Ivey, emphasized the thoroughness of the investigation, stating that while they knew from the beginning who was likely responsible, they wanted to build a strong case that would hold up in court. The family of Amber Renee Estep expressed their relief and sorrow, with her uncle, Jeff Matheny, stating that the family had been aware of the circumstances but had to remain silent to avoid compromising the investigation. The family hopes for closure and justice in Amber’s brutal murder.
