On January 20, 2024, 17-year-old Terrance Farrington Jr. was shot and killed outside a Best Buy store in Plantation, Florida. According to his father, Terrance, the incident was a case of mistaken identity. The shooting was part of a series of violent crimes linked to a notorious gang known as the Dania Hot Boyz or Grand Mafia.
The investigation into Farrington's death was a pivotal moment in a broader interagency operation.
The probe began after Sigmund Brown's fingerprint was recovered from a car connected to the homicide at the Best Buy. Brown, a 27-year-old leader of the gang, was already known to the Broward Sheriff's Office's Gang Investigations Task Force and the State Attorney's Office.
The arrest of Brown, along with other suspected gang members, led investigators to uncover additional homicides linked to the group. Eight suspected gang members were ultimately charged in a 33-count indictment that included eight first-degree murder counts, among other charges such as attempted murders, conspiracy, racketeering, and possession of a machine gun.
Farrington's family expressed relief that the case had been solved, with his father stating that the family was grateful for the resolution, despite the tragic circumstances. The joint investigation involving the Broward Sheriff's Office, the State Attorney's Office, and other law enforcement partners resulted in the solving of eight homicides, including Farrington's, and more than a dozen attempted murder cases throughout Broward County.
The suspects arrested in connection with these crimes include Sigmund Brown, Kevaris Johnson, Gerard Charles, Vondarious Davis, Rajah Rolle, Tyriq Jackson, Jared McCabe, and Trayvon Key. Each of the defendants who appeared in court entered a not-guilty plea. The arrests and subsequent charges have been hailed as a significant step in making the community safer by ridding it of violent gang members.
