On February 2, 2024, 26-year-old Edward James Bennis, a White male, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident outside Norton's Riverside Bar and Grill in Crystal River, Florida. Bennis, an employee at the establishment, was attempting to intervene in an altercation when he was fatally shot.
The incident began when 24-year-old Gabriel Hugh Trainor, a patron of the bar, engaged in a minor altercation with another individual inside the premises. The confrontation escalated and moved to the front patio. Bennis stepped in, verbally attempting to de-escalate the situation. Following this, Trainor exited the bar and proceeded to his vehicle. Several minutes later, Bennis went outside and continued to engage with Trainor, who then armed himself with a handgun and shot Bennis multiple times. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts by responding deputies, Bennis succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Witnesses reported that Trainor was standing over Bennis when law enforcement arrived. He was arrested on the spot and charged with second-degree murder. Trainor is currently held without bond at the Citrus County Detention Facility.
Bennis was remembered by friends and family as a hardworking and genuine individual. He was known for his willingness to help others and his dedication to his work. His sister, Bailey Ziegler, described him as her best friend and someone who always wanted to protect everybody. Caydience Bond, whose mother managed the bar, recounted that Bennis had stayed late to ensure her mother wasn't alone while closing the establishment. She emphasized his selflessness and the impact he had on those around him.
Sheriff Mike Prendergast expressed his condolences to Bennis's family, stating, "Unfortunately, arguments too often turn violent when alcohol is involved. Trainor not only made the decision to take another man's life but also endangered other citizens with his reckless discharge of a firearm." He affirmed the commitment of the Citrus County Sheriff's Office to work diligently with judicial partners to ensure justice is served.
