On March 11, 2024, Joseph Mitchel Cardella, a 19-year-old from Melbourne, Florida, was fatally shot along with another 19-year-old, Logan Thompson from Palm Bay, in the Vero Lake Estates neighborhood of Indian River County. The two victims had traveled from Brevard County to Indian River County to sell approximately $3,000 worth of THC vape pens.
