On Sunday, May 19, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred at North Jetty Park in Nokomis, Florida, resulting in the death of 25-year-old Octavius Cornelius Lee Cummings Jr. The incident happened around 7:16 p.m. when Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported shooting at the park, located at 100 Casey Key Rd. Upon arrival, they found Cummings' lifeless body.
The shooting is believed to have resulted from an altercation between Cummings and 22-year-old Franklin Roosevelt Raybon Jr., also from Port Charlotte. Raybon voluntarily surrendered to the authorities on Tuesday afternoon and has been identified as the sole suspect in the murder.
Raybon has been formally charged with second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Cummings. Additionally, he faces an attempted felony murder charge for discharging a firearm towards another person near the victim, although the second person was unharmed by the gunshot. Raybon is currently in custody at the Sarasota County Correctional Facility.
Following the incident, North Jetty Park was closed for investigation but has since been reopened. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has emphasized that the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident and there are no known concerns to the public. Octavius Cornelius Lee Cummings Jr., known as "NuNu," was a resident of Northport, Florida. Visitation services for him were scheduled to be held at Westside Funeral Home in Palmetto, Florida.
