On July 28, 2023, the life of 22-year-old Morgan Dane Salgado was cut short in what began as a late-night family dispute. Salgado, a Hispanic/Latino male, was at his grandmother's apartment in Cortez, Colorado, resting on the couch after telling her he didn't feel well. The quiet of the evening was shattered when his sister, Kaylee Sanders, arrived.
A confrontation erupted between the siblings, reportedly over Salgado drinking some of Sanders' beer.
The argument escalated with tragic speed, culminating in Sanders fatally shooting her brother in the head. In the frantic 911 call placed by their grandmother, Audrey Collom, Sanders could be heard in the background, shouting about her brother being 'narcissistic' and 'abusive' and stating, 'he never leaves me alone.' When Cortez Police officers arrived at the South Madison Street apartment, they found Salgado deceased on the couch.
Kaylee Sanders fled the scene armed with a handgun. Police located her on South Broadway, where she initially refused to drop her weapon. After a tense standoff, officers subdued her using a beanbag gun and took her into custody.
The investigation into Salgado's death quickly revealed a darker and more complex series of events. Sanders was also implicated and subsequently charged with the murder of another man, 66-year-old Lewis Wall, who had been found shot to death in his home a day before Salgado's killing. Sanders eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of her brother and Wall. She was sentenced to a maximum of 55 years in prison for the killings, with an additional concurrent sentence for assaulting police officers. During legal proceedings, it was alleged that her brother had been abusive toward her, with Sanders telling an officer, 'Nobody wanted to listen, so I snapped. I finally snapped.'
