On the morning of Thursday, January 4th, 2024, the life of 58-year-old John David Vieira was tragically cut short in a violent act on his own property in Hotchkiss, Colorado. A man known for his entrepreneurial spirit and love for landscaping and ranching, Vieira was the victim of a fatal shooting. His death was the result of a workplace disagreement that escalated to a premeditated act of violence.
The man responsible for Vieira's death was 21-year-old Luke Shelton, an employee whom Vieira had given a chance to work when others might not have. Shelton had been living in a truck on Vieira's property with a colleague. On the day of the murder, an argument erupted between Shelton and Vieira concerning the truck. This confrontation, however, was the culmination of a sinister plan Shelton had been concocting to kill his employer, hide his body, and steal his equipment and assets.
Following the argument, Shelton shot Vieira. In a chilling confession to law enforcement, Shelton admitted to the murder, stating that Vieira had 'pushed me too far.' After the shooting, Shelton used an excavator to bury his injured employer, callously telling authorities where they could find him: 'I buried him in the dirt, next to that tree.' First responders located the freshly disturbed earth and, despite their efforts to revive him, Vieira was already deceased. The colleague who had been living with Shelton was the one who placed the 911 call and was not charged in connection with the crime.
Luke Shelton was arrested and ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and tampering with a human body. At his sentencing, he expressed remorse, reportedly stating, 'I guess it wasn't worth murdering over money.' Vieira's family, devastated by their loss, was present in the courtroom. Shelton was sentenced to a total of 56 years in prison—48 years for the murder and an additional eight years for tampering with a human body, with the sentences to be served consecutively. The judge presiding over the case described Shelton's actions as 'a truly evil act.'
