In the warm evening of July 6, 2024, a gathering of young people at Highland Hollows Park in Aurora, Colorado, turned into a scene of tragedy. Fourteen-year-old Kamiaya Keyera Cleveland, a Black female, was caught in the crossfire of a dispute that erupted at a party she was attending. As a fight broke out amongst the minors at the gathering, gunfire ensued, striking Kamiaya and two other teenage girls. Kamiaya, who was reportedly sitting in the backseat of a friend's car, was rushed to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The Arapahoe County Coroner's Office later confirmed that her death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound. The two other victims, another 14-year-old and a 15-year-old, were also injured in the shooting.
The senseless act of violence that cut short Kamiaya's life, just weeks before her fifteenth birthday, sent shockwaves through the community and left her family devastated. Known affectionately as 'Miay Miay,' Kamiaya was remembered as a vibrant and creative soul with an infectious enthusiasm for life. She had a compassionate nature and could brighten anyone's day with her laughter and smiles. An accomplished cook for her young age, she found joy in preparing meals for her loved ones, with chicken alfredo being one of her signature dishes. Her family described her as a cherished daughter, sister, niece, and granddaughter who was a beacon of light in their lives.
In the wake of the shooting, the Aurora Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Their efforts led to the arrest of 17-year-old Jordyn Riley in connection with the fatal shooting. Riley was taken into custody on August 9, 2024, while being held on an unrelated matter. She is being charged as an adult and faces 29 counts, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and first-degree assault. Authorities have stated they are not actively seeking any other suspects in the case. The arrest brought a measure of relief to Kamiaya's family, who expressed their desire for justice and for the suspect to face adult consequences for her actions.
