A vibrant life was tragically cut short in Aurora, Colorado, leaving a community to mourn the loss of 15-year-old KTahna Jordin Smith. Known to her loved ones as Jordin, she was remembered for her radiant and caring spirit, a young woman who brought light to those around her. Her parents, Cynthia Coleman and Kevin Smith, described her as the life of the party, someone who was always dancing, singing, and looking out for others. Her father spoke of her irreplaceable spirit, and her mother recalled how Jordin would cry if she saw someone else crying, a testament to her empathetic nature.
On the night of Sunday, June 1, 2025, Jordin was at a party that had moved from Denver to the area of East Hoffman Boulevard in Aurora. A fight broke out among a group of girls, and amidst the chaos, a 14-year-old boy from Colorado Springs allegedly armed himself and fired multiple rounds into the crowd. A family member who witnessed the tragic event recalled hearing Jordin yell for everyone to 'get down' before she herself was struck by the gunfire. The shooting, which occurred around 12:30 a.m. near Aurora Fire Rescue Station 2, left two others injured: a 20-year-old woman and another 15-year-old girl who sustained a graze wound.
Aurora firefighters returning from a call discovered Jordin and the 20-year-old woman with gunshot wounds and immediately began to provide medical aid. Both were transported to a nearby hospital, but Jordin succumbed to her injuries. The Arapahoe County Coroner's Office later classified her death as a homicide. The investigation that followed led police to a 14-year-old suspect who was arrested in Colorado Springs on an unrelated warrant for motor vehicle theft. A search of his home uncovered two handguns with a caliber consistent with the shell casings found at the scene of the shooting.
Prosecutors have since formally charged the 14-year-old suspect, whose name has not been publicly released due to his age, with first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, ten counts of attempted murder with extreme indifference, and two counts of possession of a handgun by a juvenile. His case is currently in the juvenile court system. In the wake of this senseless act of violence, family and friends gathered at Nome Park to hold a vigil for Jordin, remembering a young life full of promise that was taken far too soon. Her mother has expressed her intention to work with other mothers and community groups to combat gun violence, hoping to prevent other families from experiencing such a profound loss.
