In the late summer of 2024, the life of Paul Christopher Peavey, a 57-year-old male resident of Idaho Springs, Colorado, came to a tragic and violent end. Peavey, a well-known Doberman breeder, was last heard from on August 19, 2024, and was reported missing two days later. The search for him concluded tragically on August 24, 2024, when a privately organized search party discovered his body on his property located on Two Brothers Road.
Investigators determined that Peavey had been shot multiple times. His death was officially ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Peavey's murder quickly focused on the disappearance of several of his Doberman puppies. Authorities believed that tracking down the missing puppies, which had been microchipped, could lead them to the person or persons responsible for Peavey's death. His other adult dogs were found running loose on his property. Valuables, including money, jewelry, and metal detecting equipment, were also reported stolen from his camper.
Within days of the discovery of Peavey's body, authorities made their first arrest. Sergio Ferrer, a 36-year-old man, was taken into custody on August 24, 2024, on an unrelated warrant. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and robbery in connection with Peavey's death. According to court documents, Ferrer gave conflicting accounts of his involvement, at one point claiming he shot Peavey in self-defense. Investigators found Peavey's phone and other belongings at the residence where Ferrer was living.
Several months later, in April 2025, a second suspect was arrested. Ana Ferrer, Sergio Ferrer's wife, was extradited from Nebraska and charged with accessory to a crime, theft, and tampering with physical evidence. She later pleaded guilty to accessory to a crime and misdemeanor theft in a plea agreement. The investigation revealed that Sergio Ferrer had made numerous attempts to sell Doberman puppies on social media following Peavey's death. While some of the puppies were eventually located, the whereabouts of several others remain unknown.
