In the spring of 2023, the disappearance of Dr. John Forsyth, a 49-year-old male emergency room doctor, sent ripples of concern through his community. On May 21st, he was reported missing after failing to show up for his shift at Mercy Hospital in Cassville, Missouri, an act his family described as entirely out of character for the dedicated physician and father of eight.
The last contact anyone had with him was a text message to his fiancée on the morning of his disappearance, promising to see her soon. Security footage later showed him at a public pool parking lot where he left his car unlocked with his wallet inside before getting into another vehicle and driving away.
The search for Dr. Forsyth came to a grim conclusion nine days later, on May 30th, when a kayaker discovered his body in Beaver Lake, approximately 20 miles from where he was last seen. An autopsy revealed that he had died from a gunshot wound to the head. The investigation into his death, led by the Benton County, Arkansas, sheriff's office, delved into the doctor's life, uncovering complexities that were unknown to many who knew him.
Investigators ultimately concluded that Dr. Forsyth's death was a suicide. The chief medical examiner at the Arkansas State Crime Lab supported this finding. Authorities pointed to surveillance videos of Forsyth riding a bicycle to Beaver Lake, with the bicycle later found near where his body was recovered. A report from the sheriff's office detailed what they described as a 'secret life,' suggesting Forsyth struggled with depression and had expressed suicidal thoughts to a select few. The report also mentioned text messages in which he allegedly asked a nurse to kill him. Despite his family's initial disbelief that he would take his own life, particularly given his recent engagement and seemingly positive outlook following his divorce, detectives found no evidence to suggest foul play. The case was closed without any arrests or suspects being named.
