In Hope, Arkansas, a young man's life was cut short in an act of violence that reverberated through the community. James 'Toot' Hollywood Deloney, a 22-year-old male, was known for his loving, laid-back, and quiet spirit. He had a smile that could light up any room and a deep love for his family, friends, and God. A member of the Hope Public Schools Class of 2021, he cherished spending time with his loved ones and was a father to a young son.
On the night of Wednesday, May 8, 2024, the
sound of gunfire shattered the peace on East First Street. When officers from the Hope Police Department arrived, they discovered James Deloney suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Wadley Regional Medical Center, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away. His death was ruled a homicide, prompting an investigation into the fatal shooting.
In the days following the shooting, the Hope Police Department identified a suspect in connection with Deloney's death. They issued a warrant for the arrest of Cortez Darquis Rhodes on a charge of 1st Degree Murder. The search for Rhodes came to an end on Monday, May 27, 2024, when he voluntarily turned himself in to investigators at the Hope Police Department. He was then taken into custody and held at the Hempstead County Detention Facility to await his first court appearance.
