A quiet Sunday afternoon in Salt Lake City was shattered by violence on March 3, 2024, leaving 61-year-old Hay Ly, an Asian male, dead in a workplace shooting. The incident unfolded at Varex Imaging, a medical device manufacturer located at 1678 South Pioneer Road. Salt Lake City police responded to a call of a man with a gun at the business at approximately 2:33 p.m.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim scene.
Hay Ly was found deceased inside the building, the victim of apparent gunshot wounds. Outside in the parking lot, another man, identified as 56-year-old Miller Bin, was also found dead. Investigators quickly determined that the event was a murder-suicide.
According to the preliminary investigation, Miller Bin, an employee at Varex Imaging, shot and killed his coworker, Hay Ly, inside the facility. After the initial shooting, Bin walked out to the parking lot where he then took his own life. A firearm was recovered near his body. The motive for this tragic act of workplace violence remains under investigation by the Salt Lake City Police Department.
In the aftermath, Varex Imaging has been cooperating with the police investigation and has provided grief counselors and support for their employees. Authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community as the sole suspect is deceased. No arrests have been made, as the perpetrator was identified at the scene. This incident marked the third homicide in Salt Lake City for the year 2024.
