In the late hours of January 2, 2023, a somber event unfolded near the small town of Farley, Iowa, culminating in the tragic death of Hunter Krapfl, a 29-year-old Caucasian male from the nearby community of Dyersville. The evening began with a dispatch call to law enforcement at approximately 10:45 p.m., alerting them to a possible intoxicated driver in a red Chevrolet Silverado.
A Farley police officer later spotted a vehicle matching this description and initiated a traffic stop for a minor violation around 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of US 20 and Sullivan Road.
As officers from the Farley Police Department, assisted by the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office, approached the stopped truck, a single gunshot suddenly rang out from within the vehicle. The officers discovered that the driver and sole occupant of the truck, identified as Hunter Krapfl, had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement on the scene immediately rendered aid and called for emergency medical services.
Despite their efforts, and the arrival of Dyersville EMS, Hunter Krapfl was pronounced dead at the scene.
