On May 17, 2022, 14-year-old Emir Rivas tragically lost his life in Phoenix, Arizona, in an incident involving a firearm. Emir was riding in a vehicle near 11th and Moreland streets when a 15-year-old boy, also in the car, accidentally discharged a gun he was handling. The shot struck Emir, who was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
