On July 12, 2024, at about 2:18 a.m., Kashmir Vaughn, a 19-year-old Black / African American male from Phoenix, Arizona, was fatally shot during a confrontation at the Serafina at South Mountain apartment complex in the Ahwatukee area near 51st Street and Elliot Road. Police were called to reports of gunfire in the fenced community swimming pool area of the complex, located around 11025 South 51st Street/51st Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found two adult men suffering from serious gunshot wounds by the pool. Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where one was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and later released, while Vaughn succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, early information indicated that the shooting grew out of a verbal argument between two groups of people gathered inside the fenced pool area. Multiple witnesses were present, and officers detained several individuals at the scene who were believed to have been involved in or connected to the altercation. Authorities publicly appealed for information, asking anyone who might have photos, videos, or details about the confrontation to contact Silent Witness, the local anonymous tip line, and noted that tips leading to an arrest or indictment could qualify for a financial reward. Multiple outlets, including local television stations and regional news sites, continued to describe the suspects as being sought by police in the days following the shooting, indicating that the investigation was focused on identifying and locating those responsible rather than publicly naming any accused person.
Beyond the immediate circumstances of the shooting, online tributes and memorial pages paint a picture of Vaughn as a deeply loved young man whose death left a large family and community grieving. A memorial fundraiser describes him as someone who loved his family and sports, a devoted father who had recently welcomed a baby son in April 2024, and a hard-working team member at a Wendy’s restaurant in Phoenix. It notes that his passing was sudden and devastating for those who knew him, and that family and friends were working to cover the costs of bringing his body home and holding services in his honor. The same fundraiser and remembrance sites also state that, even weeks after his death, there was still no one in custody for the killing, and his loved ones expressed hope and prayers that justice would eventually be achieved through the ongoing investigation.
