In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a Phoenix family gathering ended in tragedy with the death of 15-year-old Daniela MacKenzy Espinosa. On the night of January 14, 2024, Daniela was at her home near 7th Avenue and Broadway Road with family and friends. The atmosphere of camaraderie was shattered when a 17-year-old male, described as a close family friend who had been living at the house intermittently, began handling a firearm.
Multiple shots were suddenly fired inside the residence.
Daniela, who was sitting on the couch in the front room, was struck twice in the stomach. In the ensuing chaos, another family member was also shot in the foot. Emergency services were called, and upon arrival, police officers found Daniela on the floor with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The other victim sustained a non-life-threatening injury.
Phoenix police detained the 17-year-old male suspect at the scene and recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the incident. He was subsequently arrested and referred to the Juvenile Court Center to face charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and weapons charges. While family members initially thought the shooting might have been accidental, they were left questioning the motive behind the teen's actions, expressing their confusion and devastation over why he would harm Daniela, especially after her family had welcomed him into their home.
Daniela was a ninth-grader at NFL Yet College Prep Academy and was remembered by loved ones as a kind, big-hearted individual who enjoyed music, volleyball, and basketball. Described as an easygoing 'tomboy,' she had many friends and leaves behind seven siblings. In the days following her death, family and friends held a candlelight vigil outside her home to honor her memory, with about 100 people in attendance. Her school also paid tribute with a balloon release and a donation to assist with funeral expenses.
