On May 12, 2015, Marcus Wheeler, an 18-year-old senior at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, Arizona, took his own life in a tragic incident that shocked the community. Wheeler, who was considered one of the best distance runners in Arizona, shot himself outside the school gym despite efforts by a school resource officer to convince him to put the gun down.
