In the small town of Show Low, Arizona, a dedicated police officer's life was cut short in a sudden act of violence. Darrin Lee Reed, a 50-year-old male, was a respected officer with the Show Low Police Department. On November 8, 2016, what began as a routine call about a suspicious person near a local motel escalated into a tragedy that would deeply affect the community.
Officer Reed, along with other officers, initially responded to the call but were unable to find the individual in
question. When a second call came in about the same person, they returned to the location. This time, they located the man, who then fled on foot. As the officers pursued him, the suspect produced a handgun and opened fire, striking Officer Reed. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Daniel Erickson, fled the scene, sparking a manhunt. He was later found barricaded in a cabin in the Pinetop-Lakeside area, where he had taken a teenage girl hostage. A tense standoff ensued for several hours as law enforcement officials attempted to negotiate with Erickson.
The standoff came to a violent end when Erickson fired at the officers who had surrounded the cabin. The officers returned fire, and Erickson was shot and killed. The teenage hostage was rescued and treated for minor injuries from glass shards. It was later revealed that Erickson had a criminal history, having previously served prison time for endangerment and a marijuana-related offense. Officer Reed, a U.S. Air Force veteran, had served with the Show Low Police Department for ten years and had previously been with the Navajo County Sheriff's Office for another decade.
