On a tragic day in Mesa, Arizona, the life of 24-year-old Chelsey Anderson was cut short in a devastating act of violence. A former Miss Black Teen Arizona, Chelsey was a vibrant young woman with a future full of promise. She was a mother to a one-year-old son and was remembered by her family as being full of life, energy, and compassion.
The events that led to her untimely death unfolded on February 5, 2018.
Chelsey had recently ended her relationship with her 24-year-old ex-boyfriend, Tyler Ruiz. Accompanied by her sister, Shereice, Chelsey went to Ruiz's apartment to retrieve some of her personal belongings. It was a seemingly ordinary task that quickly escalated into a scene of unimaginable horror. Without warning, Ruiz opened fire, fatally wounding Chelsey.
In the midst of the chaos, Shereice was also shot five times. Miraculously, she survived the ordeal, narrowly avoiding catastrophic injuries. The couple's young son, who was also present in the apartment at the time of the shooting, was thankfully unharmed. After killing Chelsey and injuring her sister, Tyler Ruiz turned the gun on himself, ending his own life in a tragic murder-suicide.
The aftermath of the shooting left a family shattered and a community in mourning. As it was a murder-suicide, there were no arrests to be made in connection with Chelsey's death. Her family was left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a beloved daughter, sister, and mother, vowing to keep her memory alive for her young son.
