In the early morning hours of June 30, 2018, a dispute in a midtown Tucson parking lot escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 23-year-old Joseph Anthony Campos. The incident unfolded just after 3:00 a.m. at 3650 East Speedway Boulevard, where Tucson Police officers were dispatched following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Campos unresponsive in the parking lot, suffering from obvious gunshot wounds.
Investigations by homicide detectives revealed
that the shooting stemmed from a large altercation among a group of males in the parking lot. During the fight, one man, later identified as 21-year-old Michael Anthony Colmenero, drew a handgun and fired multiple shots into the air. As this was happening, a second individual, 43-year-old Eric Zamarra, also fired a gun, with his shot fatally striking Campos.
Following an investigation that included tips from the public, felony arrest warrants were issued for both Colmenero and Zamarra. On July 7, 2018, both men turned themselves in to the authorities. Zamarra was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and disorderly conduct with a deadly weapon. Colmenero faced charges of possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited possessor, discharging a firearm within the city limits, and disorderly conduct with a deadly weapon.
