In the quiet retirement community of Sun City West, Arizona, the life of 90-year-old Genevieve Artikuski came to a tragic end on October 3, 2019. Deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office were called to the Sun West Choice Healthcare & Rehab facility near Meeker Boulevard and Camino del Sol around 7 a.m. in response to a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the bodies of Genevieve and her 89-year-old husband, Mickie Artikuski.
Investigators soon pieced together the
heartbreaking events that led to the couple's deaths. The evening before the incident, Genevieve had been complaining to her husband about being in severe pain and had expressed a desire to die. It was a conversation that seemingly prompted a drastic and sorrowful decision. The following morning, Mickie returned to the care facility where his wife resided.
In an act of desperation and what has been described as a murder-suicide, Mickie shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. The investigation concluded that there were no other individuals involved, and authorities were not seeking any outstanding suspects.
