On the evening of April 16, she left her office on Capitol Hill and returned to her condominium at The Dorset, just six blocks away.
It was the last time she was seen alive.
The following morning, concern grew when Sally failed to attend a scheduled 8 a.m. breakfast interview with Senator Evans and a reporter. Her stepbrother and a colleague went to her apartment to check on her. What they discovered was a horrific scene. Inside the blood-stained apartment, they found Sally's body; she had been stabbed multiple times. Investigators noted that there were no signs of forced entry into her secured building, suggesting she may have known her attacker or was ambushed near her mailbox, which was found open with the mail still inside.
The investigation into Sally Heet's murder was extensive. Police explored numerous leads and questioned many individuals. At one point, about three months into the investigation, authorities focused on an unidentified suspect who was known to Sally and familiar with her apartment building.
