Due to the belief that the crime was premeditated, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office took the unusual step of charging the three minors as adults. They were booked into the Pinal County Jail and faced charges of first-degree murder. The decision to try them as adults was based on the accusation that they had planned the killing, which, according to the authorities, meant they forfeited their right to be treated as juvenile offenders.
