In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Tucson, Arizona, the life of 52-year-old Mark Edward Doe was tragically cut short. On April 25, 2021, Doe, a male with a charismatic personality, found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time in a downtown parking garage on Congress Street. It was there that he witnessed two young men attempting to rob several people before carjacking a white Nissan pickup truck.
In a selfless act of courage, he attempted to intervene and stop the perpetrators.
As the armed men tried to flee in the stolen vehicle, they collided with several other cars. A group of individuals, including Doe, confronted them near the garage's exit in an attempt to prevent their escape. During this confrontation, one of the suspects fired a handgun, striking Doe. The two men then sped out of the garage, leaving a scene of chaos and a man fatally wounded. Emergency services arrived to find Doe with severe gunshot trauma and, despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The hours following the shooting were marked by an intense search for the suspects. Later that day, a Tucson police detective spotted the stolen pickup truck. A pursuit began, and at one point, the driver of the stolen vehicle fired shots at the pursuing officers. The chase ended when the truck was abandoned, and the suspect fled on foot into a nearby apartment complex. An extensive search involving a SWAT team, a K9 unit, and a helicopter was conducted, but the suspect initially managed to evade capture.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of two suspects. The day after the shooting, police arrested 21-year-old Luis Alberto Garcia at a local hotel. A few days later, the second suspect, 19-year-old Alexis Enrique Diaz, was also taken into custody. Both men were subsequently charged in connection with the robbery and the death of Mark Edward Doe, a man who was remembered by his family for his love of life, his faith, and his inspiring and optimistic outlook.
