On a Sunday afternoon in Glendale, Arizona, a simmering domestic dispute erupted into a fatal act of violence that claimed the life of 44-year-old Mike Ohure. The male victim had generously opened his home to an acquaintance, 35-year-old Lionel Aaron Begay, offering him a place to stay. On March 13, 2022, this act of kindness took a tragic turn when a heated argument broke out between Begay and his girlfriend in front of the residence.
As the verbal altercation escalated, Begay allegedly
produced a handgun. In an attempt to de-escalate the dangerous situation, Ohure stepped in to intervene. His courageous effort was met with gunfire, as Begay allegedly shot him multiple times. In the chaotic moments that followed, Ohure's friends desperately tried to rush him to a local hospital for medical attention. Their frantic journey was cut short when their vehicle was involved in a collision at the intersection of 59th and Peoria Avenues.
First responders, who were already en route to the initial shooting call, arrived at the scene of the car crash to find Ohure suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
In the wake of the shooting, Lionel Aaron Begay fled the scene before police arrived. However, law enforcement officers were able to locate him within the neighborhood shortly thereafter and take him into custody. Begay was subsequently arrested and is facing serious charges, including second-degree murder and other weapons-related offenses, for his alleged role in the death of the man who had offered him shelter.
