On a tragic evening in Phoenix, Arizona, 44-year-old Karla Garzona's life was cut short in a senseless act of violence. On August 28, 2022, a horrific shooting rampage unfolded in the northern part of the city, claiming the lives of two innocent people, including Garzona. The perpetrator, 24-year-old Isaiah Steven Williams, was heavily armed and clad in tactical gear when he began his assault near a hotel located at 27th Avenue and Deer Valley Road.
As the chaos began to erupt, Garzona
and Misael Arevalo, 36, were simply pulling into the hotel parking lot. Their vehicle was directly targeted by Williams, who unleashed a hail of bullets from a semi-automatic rifle. Both Garzona and Arevalo were fatally wounded in the attack. The gunman continued his rampage, firing at the hotel and injuring several other people. The community was thrown into a state of terror as the sound of rapid gunfire echoed through the area for an estimated 15 minutes.
When Phoenix police officers arrived at the scene, they were immediately met with gunfire from Williams. A fierce shootout ensued, during which two officers were injured. One officer was struck by a bullet, while the other was hit by shrapnel. Despite the danger, law enforcement worked to evacuate nearby businesses and secure the area. The violent spree caused significant disruption and left a lasting impact on the witnesses and the wider community. Four marked police vehicles were damaged by the gunfire during the intense confrontation.
The suspect, Isaiah Steven Williams, was later found dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. This brought an end to the immediate threat, but not before he had inflicted irreversible pain and loss. In addition to the firearm, authorities found that Williams was in possession of incendiary devices, including a Molotov cocktail that he had attempted to use against a nearby business, though it failed to ignite. The investigation concluded that Williams acted alone, and with his death at the scene, there were no arrests to be made in connection with the murders of Karla Garzona and Misael Arevalo.
