On the afternoon of September 22, 2022, a report of two unresponsive people brought deputies from the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office to a roadside in Arizona. Near County 13th Street and Avenue F, they found Daniel Herrera Jr., a 31-year-old Hispanic male from San Luis, and 28-year-old Kristin Carrillo. Both had suffered apparent gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene around 4:30 p.m.
Within ten minutes of the initial call, authorities were dispatched to another shooting
scene roughly seven miles away, in the area of S. Mojave Lane and 8th Street. There they found a third victim, 45-year-old Juan Luna-Montijo, who also had been shot. He was rushed to Yuma Regional Medical Center but later died from his injuries. Investigators quickly determined that the two deadly scenes were connected, turning their focus to a triple homicide.
For more than a year, the case remained unsolved as the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office continued to investigate. A major development came in late 2023 when detectives identified Ivan Humberto Osuna, a 41-year-old from San Luis, as a suspect in all three killings. Investigators learned that Osuna was already in custody in another state on an unrelated matter. After an arrest warrant was issued, he was extradited to Arizona and booked into the Yuma County Detention Center on December 12, 2023. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
In March 2026, a jury found Ivan Humberto Osuna, then 43, guilty of three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Daniel Herrera Jr., Kristin Carrillo, and Juan Luna-Montijo. At his sentencing hearing, Osuna addressed the court, stating that two of the victims had been his friends. Family members of the victims also spoke about the pain his crimes had caused. On March 27, 2026, Judge Claudia Gonzales sentenced Osuna to three consecutive natural life terms in prison without the possibility of parole.
