A party in Rimrock, Arizona, took a tragic turn on the night of October 15, 2022, ending in the death of 27-year-old Efrain Arreola. The incident unfolded just before 11:00 p.m. at a large gathering on Top O The Morning drive, where an argument escalated into violence. The male victim was among the partygoers when the fatal sequence of events began.
According to witness statements given to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, an altercation had broken out involving another 27-year-old
man, Rafael Zapata of Camp Verde. After being asked to leave the party, Zapata was attempting to drive away with his companions when his vehicle was surrounded by other attendees, and one of the car's windows was broken. In response, Zapata fired a gun into the crowd, and the shot struck Efrain Arreola, inflicting a fatal wound.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Efrain's 22-year-old brother, Edgar Arreola, produced his own 9mm pistol. Edgar then shot at Zapata, who was still in his vehicle, striking him multiple times. During the exchange of gunfire, Edgar Arreola sustained a minor gunshot wound to his arm. Both Efrain Arreola and Rafael Zapata died from their injuries at the scene.
Following an investigation and interviews with multiple witnesses, Edgar Arreola was arrested the next morning. He admitted to shooting Zapata, stating that he did so after Zapata had shot at him and others at the party. However, authorities charged him with first-degree murder for the death of Rafael Zapata. The basis for the charge was that he allegedly continued to fire into the car after Zapata was incapacitated and no longer considered a threat. Edgar Arreola was subsequently booked into the Camp Verde Detention Center.
