In the quiet neighborhood of Belleza in Yuma, Arizona, a house party on the evening of May 13, 2023, turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy. Among the many young people gathered at the residence on S. J Edward Drive was 19-year-old Danny Garcia, a Hispanic male known by his family for his joyful and humorous nature. The homeowners were not present, and as the night progressed, the gathering swelled to over 100 people after its location was shared on social media.
It was a night that would end in devastating loss for multiple families.
Suddenly, the festive atmosphere was shattered by the eruption of gunfire. More than 30 rounds were fired, leading to a mass shooting that left two dead and five others wounded. Danny Garcia was one of seven people shot. He was rushed to Yuma Regional Medical Center before law enforcement arrived but succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Another young man, 20-year-old Ande Blackthunder, also lost his life in the shooting. The five other victims, ranging in age from 15 to 19, sustained injuries but survived.
In the aftermath of the deadly shooting, the Yuma Police Department launched an intensive investigation. They recovered several weapons from the scene and determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, as those involved were acquainted with each other. The investigation led to the arrests of three suspects: Abraham Colin, Jose Lopez, and Aden Arviso. Lopez, who was 18 at the time of the incident, faced charges of first-degree murder and was ultimately found guilty. Colin also faced charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault, while Arviso was charged with false reporting and disorderly conduct with a weapon.
