In the quiet community of Lemoyne, Nebraska, the life of 44-year-old Steven Holland came to a tragic end on January 19, 2017. What initially appeared to be a violent crime was later determined to be a father's desperate act to protect his family. The male victim died at his family's home in the Shady Acres area near Lake McConaughy.

According to the Keith County Attorney, Steven Holland had assaulted his mother, Marie Holland. He then proceeded to the basement of the home, where he armed himself with a large knife. From the basement, he made threats to kill both his mother and his father, Wesley Holland.
Faced with an imminent and credible threat to his and his wife's lives, Wesley Holland retrieved a rifle. He then shot his son, Steven. The single gunshot proved to be fatal. Following an investigation into the shooting, the Keith County Attorney's Office concluded that Wesley Holland acted in self-defense and in the defense of his wife.
As a result of this determination, no criminal charges were filed against Wesley Holland in connection with his son's death. The case was officially ruled as a justifiable homicide. The incident left the small lakeside community in a state of shock, as the details of the violent encounter within the Holland family home came to light. Wesley Holland passed away in April 2024, having been preceded in death by his son, Steven.
